Who's who in the Research Office
Every academic and research student needs some kind of help in their career, that’s why Universities and Colleges exist; to offer a framework and infrastructure that is conducive to academic success. What can we do for you?
Firmly committed to research, the Research Office provides expert advice, guidance and support to researchers developing research ideas and making applications for funding in order to sustain and enhance the current research base. Furthermore, we provide exemplary professional administrative support for the university’s research degree activities; this includes a ‘one stop shop’ of support for research students, supervisors and examiners and the University’s research-related committees. Having managed a successful submission to RAE2008, the Research Office is working closely with the PVC (Research) and faculties to ensure the university maximises its submission to the forthcoming Research Excellence Framework (REF).
Three core strands of support
Postgraduate Research Support
The Research Office is committed to providing opportunities for researchers to develop their skills, and enhance their personal careers and research studies. The Research Office is actively involved in the Vitae South Wales and West Hub to ensure a mechanism for providing up-to-date intelligence on QAA and Research Council initiatives effecting postgraduate researchers as well as to foster networks of other research support departments across the region.
Research Funding Support
We have a dedicated team of professionals who are able to advise and assist with the drawing up of research grant application as well as take applications through the University approval process. Several members of the Research Office have a background in research and their personal experience can often help both staff and students. In a bid to continue to increase grant applications, especially to Research Councils the Research Office actively encourages researchers to apply for funding opportunities via the ‘Funding Matters’ blog.
Research Information Management Support
Working alongside the Pro Vice Chancellor (Research) the Research Office successfully managed the submission of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE2008) and continues to gather intelligence on its successor, the forthcoming Research Excellence Framework (REF). In preparation for the REF, we are working in conjunction with Faculties and support departments across the University to ensure the management information systems used for research are reliable and provide high quality, appropriate data in a timely and efficient manner for both internal and external reporting. In addition the Research Office continuously reviews research in Faculties in order to inform and advise upon the organisational structure of research across the University and to identify areas of best practice for dissemination.
