Higher Academic Awards
The Higher Academic Awards Committee considers applications and proposals for the conferment of readerships, professorships, visiting professorships, visiting fellows and emeritus professorships. They also consider applications for the award of higher doctorates.
Academic Board recently approved major changes to the regulations governing the conferment of higher academic awards. The regulations now provide clear career pathways in three distinct areas namely:
• Research and Development
• Teaching and Learning
• Innovation and Engagement
Readers
A readership is a prestigious title and is a senior designation bestowed by the University in recognition of excellence in their chosen criteria.
Professor
A Professor will have demonstrated outstanding qualities of academic leadership and will be expected to have substantially furthered the aims of higher education generally and/or the university in particular.
Visiting Fellow
The status of visiting fellow will be conferred on those from the industrial, professional or voluntary sectors who are expected to make a significant contribution to the university’s scholarship research, innovation or academic development but whose experience and expertise lies in areas other than those covered by the professorial criteria.
Visiting Professor
The status of visiting professor will be conferred on those who are expected to make a substantial contribution to the university’s scholarship, research or innovation, or for furthering the university’s external collaborative relationships.
